A comprehensive dictionary that thoroughly collects onomatopoeia, which are commonly heard expressions but not listed in dictionaries, and are simple yet difficult to paraphrase or explain. With a rich variety of examples, this dictionary has the largest number of entries among similar books, with approximately 4,500 headwords that express sounds, voices, and the appearance or state of things. In addition to introducing examples from the Kojiki and Manyoshu, as well as from genres such as Joruri and Kyogen, Soseki and Ogai, and modern essays, it also includes dialect-specific onomatopoeia, such as "mattari" used in dialects. The book is enjoyable to read from cover to cover, with explanations of the distinctions between synonymous expressions and the meanings and usage of groups of words with similar forms in small columns, as well as a mini-dictionary of Chinese words and animal sounds in the appendix.
